The core philosophy, strategy and tactics of this lecture are that if we do not determine ways to use wildland biodiversity without damaging it, and put these ways into practice, WE WILL INDEED LOSE IT. This applies especially to tropical biodiversity, but has much relevance to extra-tropical habitats as well. We have now had many decades of raising the red flag that we are losing/extinguishing/trashing wild tropical biodiversity and its ecosystems. However, simply uttering a warning cry does not create a solution - especially when the problem lies not so much in ignorance as in very human ways of using and regarding the natural environment. Humans save what is useful to them (or at least often attempt to). |
