Just as seeds dispersed by going through a vertebrate have different fates according to who is the animal, seeds that are dispersed by sticking to an animal have different fates with different animals. Here I asked two members of a biology class in Costa Rica to walk side by side through a forest understory containing a mammal-disperssed grass (Pharus mezii, Poaceae) while wearing the clothes that they happened to be wearing. The student on the right was wearing new I. Goldberg khaki drill pants, while the course assistant on the left was wearing finely woven but soft gaberdine cloth pants. The difference is obvious. A mammal does not equal a mammal does not equal a mammal. |
