Above this old field near Fairbanks, the slopes are covered with leafless birch (Betula) and poplar (Populus) trees, adding a bit more variety to the monotony of the black spruce forests. They stand leafless during the winter (though the poplar trees are undoubtedly doing some photosynthesis with their green bark during the warmer parts of the spring and fall, though they have to do it with very low light intensity). |
