A pair of skuas (Skua longicaudus) on their nest site and lookout perch on the tundra on a small rise, only a few inches above the permafrost. Note that the lemmings have not only not eaten down the grass immediately around this nest of predators, but the nitrogenous waste from the carcasses and feces has fertilized the soil, leading to a lush green growth of broadleafed perennials and very robust and dense clumps of grass.
