While there are no overwintering birds in the far arctic such as Devon Island, we can get back into bird habitat by moving south to where the woody vegetation projects above the snow. Here in this black spruce forest near Fairbanks, Alaska (65 degrees North), there are not only a few small insectivorous birds seeking overwintering insects hiding under tree bark and in crevices, but even big herbivorous birds.
