No, this coconut - still very much alive - is not a survivor and not slated to be a colonist. Yes, it has germinated but the fate of a coconut in such position is to make a vain attempt root (by the central root growing downward) and then somewhere in its first few months of tenuous life be ripped from the site, rolled in storm surf (and the seeding leaves and stem broken) and then deposited half dead elsewhere to repeat the process. Then how are adult coconuts produced? |
