These Costa Rican noctuid moths not only have very fine false eye spots as individuals, but when they roost in the daytime, they group together in clusters on a tree trunk - the very same tree trunks foraged on by both small gleaning insectivorous birds (their potential predators) and arboreal bird-eating snakes. Imagine being a ten gram bird working your way around a large rainforest tree trunk and abruptly encountering this field of eyes.
