One outcome is that epiphyte leaves often are evolutionarily modified into being gatherers of mineral nutrients as well as solar panels. These epiphytic bromeliads (Bromeliaceae, the pineapple family, see DHJanzen100381.jpg below) not only display their leaves upward in a radial pattern to capture light without overlapping each other seriously, but also to collect falling debris (see DHJanzen100381.jpg below).
