When Liomys mice are maintained on a pure diet of germinating Enterolobium seeds in the laboratory, as in this month-long chart of body weight of seven adult mice, the diet clearly agrees with them. Other experiments show the mice able to subsist this way for six months without difficulties. Small wonder that when offered a choice in the field of an array of seed species, Liomys mice almost always take the Enterolobium seeds first, and work energetically to harvest them from fallen fruits and from large animal dung (see below). |
