| Averaged over the 14 8-liter dung piles placed in grassland (pasture), and 14 in the forest understory, 77% of the Enterolobium seeds survived in grassland and only 2% survived in the forest. There were 500 seeds in each 8-liter dung pile. Why were any seeds taken in the grassland? Because in three cases, the Liomys living in the forest were willing to venture 50 m out into the pasture and mine the dung for seeds, creating dung piles with almost no surviving seeds. Why did any survive in the forest? Because when confronted with a small mountain of fresh dung, with the seeds scattered through it, they occasionally missed a seed - but not very often. | ||
