This large adult male Liomys mouse - very alive - is being held in one hand in preparation for marking before being released. Note the thumb against the jaw on one side, and the index finger around the neck from the other, with three fingers ready to wrap around the body if the mouse struggles severely. It can neither move forward nor rearward, and thus can be held firmly without damaging the mouse. If the mouse it grasped too tightly, it is at risk of heart failure (presumably from shock). |
