This view of the world through the eyes of a large moth, Rothschildia lebeau (Saturniidae), is intended to display some of the complexity contained within the ordinary natural history of a single species of tropical moth. This moth ranges from south Texas (where it is known as Rothschildia forbesi) to northern South America. In the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica, the site of this story, there are two other species of Rothschildia as well, and the genus contains another dozen or more species ranging from northern Mexico to throughout South America. Additional information about Rothschildia lebeau can be found by going to http://janzen.sas.upenn.edu and then pursuing the name of the moth in the various search forms. |
