Rothschildia erycina caterpillars spin a cocoon that is similar to that of Rothschildia lebeau, but do it in a very different manner. R. lebeau caterpillars sometimes spin their cocoons directly on their food plants, or if not, drop/walk off and spin it a few meters away, at night. R. erycina, walks down the trunk of its food plant about noon, walks 70-200 m due south or due north (oddly, off by a few degrees), and then climbs up a low stem or strub to a spinning site. |
