The caterpillars and the adults are not the only stage preyed upon. This Rothschildia lebeau cocoon still shows the impression of a large bird beak across it. The moth had already eclosed, but had the bird perceived that there was a live pupa inside, it would have ripped the cocoon open to get it, as in image DHJanzen100661.jpg below. |
