Here a panel of skin is being removed from the ventral side. Note that there are no bruised/broken blood vessels below the skin, despite this animal having been hit by three cars. The skin is extremely strong, and underlain by a thick layer of fat, which is a cushion against blows as well as stored energy reserves. A bear is built for body-contact predation on large, strong and potentially dangerous other animals. |
